Villas-Boas out for Champions League glory

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas believes the London club should be targeting a maiden UEFA Champions League crown.

The four-time English league champions have never claimed European club football s biggest prize, coming closest when they lost to Manchester United on penalties in the 2008 final in Moscow.

Since then, they have made it to the semi-finals, round of 16 and quarter-finals.

But new manager Villas-Boas part of the backroom staff when they made it to the last four in 2005 and 2007 said it was only a matter of time before Chelsea finally won the competition.

Chelsea is included in those teams that permanently arrive to the semi-finals. And the semi-finals is a question of two games, where anything can happen, and unfortunately it didn t happen f…

Ronaldo keen to re-live European glory

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is hopeful the La Liga giants can claim either the league or UEFA Champions League title this campaign.

The 26-year-old won the European club competition in 2008 when Manchester United beat Chelsea in the Moscow final, but was a loser the following season as Sir Alex Ferguson s side went down to Barcelona.

That proved to be Ronaldo s last game for United before a big-money move to Madrid, and his attempts to add another European title to his collection were ended last season once more by Barcelona in the semi-final stage.

The Portuguese forward believes Real Madrid can win their 10th European crown in 2011-12.

We have to win important trophies, the Liga or the Champions League because these are the titles that make you…

Schalke v Chelsea: Chance of revenge for Di Matteo

Roberto Di Matteo can exact belated revenge on Chelsea when the Premier League side visit Schalke on Tuesday.

The Italian initially joined Chelsea as a player from Lazio in 1996 and scored 26 goals in 175 appearances for the English club, before returning as Andre Villas-Boas assistant coach in 2011.

Di Matteo took on the top job on a caretaker basis after Villas-Boas was sacked in March 2012 and guided Chelsea to UEFA Champions League and FA Cup glory.

It did not work out for Di Matteo after he was appointed permanently, though, and his sacking in November 2012 was considered premature and harsh by many.

After almost two years on the sidelines, Di Matteo returned to management last month to replace Jens Keller at Schalke.

And he has the chance to…

Schmeichel undaunted by ´world class´ Kane

Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is hoping to turnaround a wretched individual record against England captain Harry Kane in Wednesday s Euro 2020 semi-final.

Kane has put a slow start to the tournament behind him during the knockout stages, following his game-sealing header in the 2-0 last-16 win over Germany with a brace in last weekend s 4-0 quarter-final demolition of Ukraine in Rome.

Leicester City keeper Schmeichel knows all about Kane s lethal qualities from their duels in the Premier League.

Indeed, Kane s 14 goals past Schmeichel are more than he has managed against any other goalkeeper across all competitions.

One of those was in a 4-2 win for Spurs at the King Power Stadium on the final day of the Premier League season that denied Leicester …

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller is desperate to seal the deal in both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal.

The Bavarians sit one point ahead of nearest rivals Borussia Dortmund in the table and booked their place in the Pokal final, where they will face RB Leipzig, with a 3-2 win over Werder Bremen at the Weserstadion.

Despite Bayern s Bundesliga dominance, they have not won the domestic double since 2016 and Muller is keen to secure success on both fronts during the remainder of the season.

We will see what the next three weeks brings, he told the German Football Federation s official website.

Of course, we are highly motivated and now want to seal the deal in both competitions. The 5-0 win in Der Klassiker against Dortmund was the initial spark. We h…
